Bracing for a Fall

“I wanted to be an expert skier. But that would never happen if I tried to find an easy and safe way.”

Ira Riklis talks about how learning to ski and overcome fears is part of becoming an expert skier. It also applies to life. There isn’t a shortcut unfortunately. You have to face the fear of falling (or failing).

“…there is no easy way to learn to make an expert turn. Let me repeat, there is NO EASY WAY to learn to make an expert turn…A non-expert skier is scared of falling. Having broken a leg and an arm, I can understand why. The tendency is to lean into the slope so as to feel confident…”

What’s the difference between the beginner and the expert? faith in your abilities and the courage to go down a steep mountain face first. Yes, the scariest way possible.

“In an expert turn, the skier has to have faith that every move will be executed properly and on time without thought. That means that if anything is off, the effect will be to launch yourself, not unlike a missile, down the mountain, FACE FIRST.”

Ira Riklis says it’s a painful process of learning — and it hurts!

“I named this maneuver a “face plant” because it was like planting your ski pole but using your face instead. In the effort to learn to be an expert skier, I performed many a face plant. To truly understand how difficult this process is, you must realize how painful each face plant is. Not only have you been punched in the face, but some of that snow (often ice) feels like a brick.”

He says the pain is difficult but worth it:

“The pain radiates down your entire body, especially your chest because after the face plant you land with a thud on your chest. Then there is the fact that your face is covered in freezing snow, which as it melts now saturates your clothing.

But after some practice the payoff is there and the pain is a past memory:

“I don’t remember the face plants really anymore; but every time I glide down a slope and experience the exhilaration, I don’t know if I can even find words to explain the joy and thrill that I feel. Mike got me to understand that I had to trust the turn and that I would eventually be rewarded by being able to complete the turn.”

The result of your hard work to master something difficult is joy. This is a microcasm for your life. It’s not easy to face but to be truly great you must go through suffering. Not around it. Not above or below it. But through it.

Ski Tip #2 Ira Riklis

Filed under: Ira Riklis — admin @ 5:14 pm

Learning to move your skis. Ira Riklis will tell you this: your skis are clamped to your boots which are on your feet. That means if you turn your foot to the right then your ski will also turn to the right.

Here is a simple exercise to get started getting used to this feeling:

  1. Pick up one foot at time, with your skis on. Turn them to the right and then the left so you get familiar with the feeling and which muscles you use. Just like in many sports, the way you point your skis determines the direction you want to go. This starts how you turn your feet.

Next is the way you stand with skis on. If you put both feet together with your skis pointing down the mountain you’ll be heading that way…FAST. A snowplow distributes your weight and helps you control your speed or even stop. Eventually you’ll move both skis to a right or left angle to stop but for now practice this move.

  1. The Snowplow:  First you need to create a stable base. That means placing your feet shoulder width apart.  Next, point your toes pointing inwards with your heels apart, so your skis make a triangle/V-shape. Bend your ankles, knees and waist slightly. Keep your arms out wide distribute your weight evenly on the balls of your feet and your heels. Make wide turns back and forth across the mountain to get used to the feel. So instead of going DOWN you’ll go ACROSS the mountain so you have more control.

Going sideways rather than straight down is important when you’re a beginner.

Ira Riklis Ski Tips: Skiing is Like Business

Filed under: Ira Riklis — admin @ 3:08 pm

Surprisingly, learning to ski has some parallels to business. Here’s another ski tip: Learn how to turn. Why do you want to learn to turn? Because turning will slow you down. That is important. If you want speed, that’s alright as long as you can STOP. As long as you can turn you can always regain control. But if you can’t turn you better be very good at stopping.

Turning on skis goes like this: shift your weight onto the ski that is not in the direction you want to turn.  This takes a small leap of faith at first. You want to zigzag down the steepest parts of the mountain. If you go straight down you’ll get so much speed that you will be forced to stop and that likely means wiping out. Perhaps getting hurt.

In business you need to learn when to make course changes when things start spinning out of control. Things can go fast – for example – your largest creditor fails. You may face bankruptcy if you don’t turn it around. You need a plan to avoid the crash!

Ira Riklis: Skiing Tips for New Skiers

Ira Riklis started his favorite hobby skiing with a private skiing lesson from a pro. Take this from his experience: Take skiing lessons. Ski resorts have classes. Expensive? Yes. To defry some of the cost you can join a group. In Utah, the Utah Winter Games has ski clinics and they are mostly free or cost very little. Look for ski organizations and see if they offer clinics like that.

Don’t think that someone you know will teach you. Why? Most people who are good skiers are not good teachers. Plus they’ll want to ski not spend time on the bunny hills with you. Whatever you do DO NOT go with someone you want to impress. Such as a date. You’ll bore them. I know.

Taking a class will help you learn the right technique from the start. Most importantly you’ll learn how to stop. Pay attention and really learn that skill. As Ira Riklis knows, this is an important skill to have. That, or you better have a guardian angel!

Ira Riklis Video?

Filed under: Ira Riklis — admin @ 1:27 pm

I wish I had a video of Ira Riklis skiing. Does anyone know where I can find one? We have the story of Ira Riklis and his love of skiing (from the interview). Now I wish we also had footage. The blog tells the story about his hobby of skiing and how he learned in Colorado which is spectacular.

I did find a video on YouTube about Ira’s favorite place to ski: Vale, Colorado. It’s summer now but this video will get you ready for ski season!

Ira has several stories from skiing – it could be a short book. Maybe Vale ski resorts should make a handbound limited edition book and include this story (as a promo piece). They could include stories from other lifelong skiers.

Here it is, the entire story of Ira’s skiing adventures:

Ira Riklis Interview: Part 1
Ira Riklis Interview: Part 2
Ira Riklis Interview: Part 3
Ira Riklis Interview: Part 4
Ira Riklis Interview: Part 5
Ira Riklis Interview: Part 6

And last of all: another skiing story from Ira.

Ira Riklis Says God Watched Out for Him

Filed under: Ira Riklis — admin @ 7:12 pm

Ira Riklis says God watched over him when he skied:

“God was watching over me because I was aimed directly at the entrance door to the lodge and there was a canopy over the entrance with supporting columns. Just before I was to hit the door, I grabbed onto one of the columns and was able to bring myself to a stop. It is amazing but I didn’t hit anyone else, I was uninjured, and there was no property damage –go figure.

It’s going to take an act of God to keep him skiing too! But skiing is one of Ira Riklis greatest pleasures in life. Even though his reflexes are slowing. And then he also uses this money metaphor (fitting): “I am beginning to slow down and be more cautious that I not write checks that my body cannot cash.”

We’ve all been there Ira. Wishing that we had eternal youth, eternal energy. But hey, at least you were spared to ski again! Who do you most want to ski with Ira? Any idols?

For now Ira is still skiing. Him and Stein Erikson.

Watch out below!

The Riklis Cousins: Lemon Tree

Filed under: Ira Riklis — admin @ 5:23 pm

Ira Riklis, son of the king Meshulam Riklis (a Las Vegas casino owner) is the co-producer of a film called Lemon Tree.

Lemon Tree (IFC Films) is the latest film from acclaimed Israeli director Eran Riklis (The Syrian Bride), who is a cousin of Ira Riklis. “Lemon Tree encapsulates harsh political realities in a gentle personal story, venturing into both sides of the Israel-Palestine line to find the human psyche behind the military posturing.” (via http://www.patrolmag.com/arts/1567/when-your-dad-turns-17)

Hiam Absass in Lemon Tree Salma Zidane (Hiam Abbass) tends a grove of cherished lemon trees, her only means of sustenance. Then one day Israel’s Defense Minister (Doron Tavory) moves in and decides to do away with any structure that might hide assassins. This includes lemon trees.

She fights to keep the grove. It encapsulates a larger fight of women, of a country and of each of us in our personal lives. It’s all a microcosm.
